Irene F. Carter 07/22/2017

Irene Francis Carter

The marks of a well-worn life are in the people we touch, the things we create, and the obstacles we overcome. After many miles traveled, memories made, and a lifetime as vivacious as it was creative, Irene Carter came to her final rest, after a long battle with cancer, on July 22. She was surrounded by family. Irene told the story of her life in the people and projects she loved. She told it with a sly smile when she knew she had the winning word in a game of Scrabble. She told it in the antiques she sold in her small-town shop and the conversations she had with patrons at the restaurant she shared with her husband. She enjoyed working with her hands: in the earth, on canvas, in needles and threads. Her story lives on in her surviving family: husband Robert W. Carter, son Matthew and his wife Rita; eldest daughter Angeleine and her husband Dustin; youngest daughter Christin, and her husband Chris; her three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is remembered as well by her siblings: Barbara Tillinghast, Claire Russell, Rhea Ritchings, and Caroline LaRose. Irene’s life and passions took her across the country, from Madrid, NY to New Jersey, to Washington D.C. and northern Virginia, to Boca Raton, FL, and to her final home in Helena, NY (a stone’s throw from her birthplace of Malone). In each place she made herself a fixture of the community. She goes now to join her parents, father Edward Henry LaRose and mother Irene Anne (Southwick) LaRose, as well as her siblings Edward LaRose, and Lee LaRose. Her quick wit, generous hospitality, and strength of character will not be forgotten. There will be no services at this time.
