Shirley L. Peterson, 90, formerly of DeKalb Junction, NY and New Haven, CT, died on February 12, 2019, at Highland Nursing Home.  There will be no services, as Shirley was a generous donation to science. Shirley is survived by her daughter Sherrie Revet of Russell, grandchildren, Erin Revet, Justin Revet, Kimberly Revet, Megan Revet, 2 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sons, Thomas J. Revet, Mark Revet, brothers, Nelson Wilmot, Albert Wilmot, Russell Wilmot, sisters, Corrina Richards and Dorothy Crosby. Shirley was born on January 21, 1929, in West Haven, CT, the daughter of the late, Nelson and Lucy Maurer Wilmot. She graduated from West Haven High School in 1946. She married Thomas Revet in 1948 that marriage ended in divorce, she then married Glenn Peterson on May 2, 1973, and he died on January 31, 2004. Shirley started her careers in Belding Cordecilli Research Center as a Lab Tech, then sold advertising at the New Haven Register, worked in classifieds at the Danbury News Times, owned the Revet Realty and Insurance in Thompson, CT, and the Peterson’s Country Realty in DeKalb Junction, NY. She was a member of MUFON and loved to collect and sell antiques. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to SUNY Upstate Medical Center research department.

Rebecca Haywood, 61, of Canton, died on February 10, 2019, at Riverledge Nursing Home. Calling hours will be Saturday, February 16, 11 am- 3 PM, the funeral service will follow at 3 PM, Reverend Robert Schrimer officiating.  There will be a burial on May 13, 2019, 11:00 am at Woodland Cemetery, Fine. Rebecca is survived by her daughter and son in law, Sarah and James Eshelman of DeKalb Junction, brothers, Malcolm and his wife Carol Hubbard of DeKalb, David Hubbard and Deborah Cady of Hannawa Falls, a sister, Louise Gardner of Norfolk, grandchildren, James Eshelman, Isaiah Eshelman, Patricia Eshelman, several nieces and nephews. Rebecca was born on January 8, 1958, in Potsdam, the daughter of the late, John Hubbard and Patricia Butterfield Gardner, Rebecca was raised by her Dad, Clarence Gardner after the passing of her father. She married Richard Haywood, on July 21, 1984, he died March 14, 1997. Rebecca was a homemaker who loved being with her grandchildren, playing bingo and crocheting. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Lawrence Valley SPCA or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

Albert “Neil” Wilson, 80, of DeKalb, died on February 1, 2019, at his home.  Calling hours will be Wednesday, February 6, 3 – 5 PM, the funeral service will follow, Reverend Robert Schrimer officiating.  There will be a private burial in the spring at Hermon Cemetery. After the service there will a gathering at the DeKalb Junction Fire Hall. Neil is survived by his sons, Thomas Wilson of Potsdam, Dale and his wife Sharon Wilson of DeKalb, Steven and his wife Elizabeth Wilson of New Hampshire, Jerry and his wife Ann Wilson of DeKalb, daughters, Cindy and her husband Joe Kelley of DeKalb, Susan and her husband David Corbine of Canton, brothers, John and his wife Nancy Wilson of DeKalb, Gary Wilson of Syracuse, Larry and his wife Linda Wilson of Hermon, Lyle Wilson of East Syracuse, a sister, Barbara Wilson of North Carolina, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Delbert Wilson, and a sister Elma Poole.  Neil was born on March 13, 1938 the son of the late, Jacob and Bertha Pelkey Wilson, in DeKalb. He married Sally Beasaw on April 23, 1955 at their home, she died in 1995. Neil was a farmer all his life at his farm on the Maple Ridge Road, he was also very proud to be part of constructing the seaway, lastly he worked for the Town of DeKalb Highway Department.  He loved his family, hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.  He was a 30 + year member if the Raripaco Club. Brenda L. Elwell, 58, of Hermon, died on January 13, 2019, at the Canton Potsdam Hospital. There will be no services.  Brenda is survived by her husband Stephen, her mother, Marilyn Davis of Hermon, her son Lawrence Elwell of Mississippi, her daughters, Stefanie and her husband Mitchell Reid of Old DeKalb, Casandra and her husband Seth McClellan of White Creek, her brothers, Matthew Davis and Joanna Wright of DeKalb, Mark Davis of Johnstown, a sister Donna Butler of DeKalb, 12 grandchildren, her close friends Robert and Ann Straton, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Donald Evans Davis.  She was born on June 22, 1960, in Amsterdam. She married Stephen Elwell on October 11, 2004. She worked as a sewing machine operator in Troy, and Vermont.  She loved hunting, fishing and working in her yard. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the hAmerican Cancer Society.

Rita A. Gooshaw, 73, of Heuvelton, died on January 3, 2019, at the Claxton Hepburn Medical Centers.  She will be laid to rest at Notre Dame Cemetery, Ogdensburg on May 20, 2019. There will be a reception to celebrate her life on May 25, 2019, 2 PM at her home, 174 Union Street, Heuvelton. Rita is survived by son, Kevin Gooshaw of Canton, her daughters, Kim and Thomas Broadhead of Wynantskill, Molly Gooshaw of Heuvelton, stepsons, Joseph Gooshaw of Willet, Randy Gooshaw of Wisconsin, a step daughter, Robin Gooshaw of Nebraska, sisters, Rose and Richard Mitchell of Ogdensburg, Lucy Carter of Ogdensburg, grandchildren, Crystal Joseph, Isaac Gooshaw, Amber Frost, April Gooshaw, Leah Broadhead, Noah Holden, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her stepson, Raymond Gooshaw.  She was born on September 11, 1945, in Ogdensburg, the daughter of William and Pearl Arnold White. She married Robert A. Gooshaw on December 7, 1973 at their home in Heuvelton, he predeceased her on September 23, 2008. She worked as head cook at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home for over 30 years.  She loved to take care of her grandchildren, shop, cook for an army and taking care of her pets. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or the Heuvelton Volunteer Fire Department

Dennis J. Olson, 65, of Brasher Falls, died on October 19, 2018, at his home. Honoring his wishes, there are no services. Dennis generously donated his body to science. Dennis is survived by his children; Dale and Pattie Olson of Massena, Matthew and Michelle Olson of Alabama, Krystal Olson and Jason Hamilton of Massena, Jennifer Olson of Canton, and Jesse Olson of Canton. He is also survived by his siblings; Daniel Olson of Alabama, Randy and Diane Olson of Rochester, NH, Dixie Olson of New Hampshire, Dianne and Victor Porter of Parsonfield , Maine, Ruby and Roland Simino of Middleton, NH, his cousin and friend Keith Olson, 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, several nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Ricky Olson, Donna Richards, Raymond Olson and a great-grandson Aiden Riley. Dennis was born on July 1, 1953, in Massena, to the late Harold Vernon and Arlene Joyce LaShomb Olson. He owned and operated Coral Reef Painting in Middleton, New Hampshire. He loved doing commercial painting. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund.

Joan E. Kampnich, 78, of Boonville, died on October 20, 2018, at the Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville. Burial will be Friday, November 2, 2018, 3 PM, at the Hermon Cemetery, a celebration of life will follow at the Lone Wolf Saloon in Hermon. Joan is survived by her son, Daniel and his wife Tracy Wadsworth of Holland Patent, grandchildren, Casey Tyndall of Holland Patent, Kayla Tersip Wadsworth of Remsen, step grandchildren, Chloe and Calli Becker of Holland Patent, special nieces, Yvonne Stewart of Pyrites, Cherie Frisco Williams of North Carolina, Cynthia Kampnich Buell of Lowville, a special friend, Nancy Kampnich, several nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins. She was predeceased by her son, Lonnie Frisco, brothers, Gary Frisco, Ronald Frisco and Harold Frisco. Joan was born on November 27, 1939, in Ogdensburg, to the late William Ernest and Audrey Peters Frisco, she graduated from DeKalb High School in 1957. Marriages to Daniel Wadsworth Sr. and Bernard Kampnich ended in divorce. She was employed by the US Postal Service as a clerical worker in Syracuse, owned and operated Kam-Bern’s Diner in Remsen, then owned Joan’s Village Inn in Remsen. She moved to Croghan in 1985 and worked as a medical clerk at Fort Drum, until she retired in 2001. In 2001 she became the librarian of the Croghan Free Library. She was a parishioner at St. Stephens Church in Croghan. She loved Yankees baseball, traveling, country music, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. Carrie L. Knapp “Bear”, 42, of DeKalb, died on October 9, 2018, at her home. There will be a memorial service at the Christian Life Fellowship Church, 52 Church St., Gouverneur on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 12:30 PM, Pastor Lavek officiating. A celebration of her life will follow at the Gouverneur Elks Club. Carrie is survived by her parents, Alan and Valerie Breen Knapp, her companion, Jed Meade, her son, Malachi Schnaderbeck, a daughter and son in law, Montana and her husband Jason Lavigne, brothers, Lee and his wife Cindy Knapp, Timothy and his wife Bettyann Knapp, Andy Knapp and Barbara Crosby, Jesse and his wife Renee Knapp, sisters Betsy Williamson, Erin and her husband David Zahler, Anna Knapp and Cody Peck, grandchildren, Lannah and Georgia Lavigne, several nieces and nephews. She was born on October 17, 1975, in Arlington Vermont. She worked as a cook at the Potsdam Elks Club #2074, prior to that she owned and operated her dairy farm as a single parent with two children. Carrie was a member of the Potsdam Elks Club, a past member of the 4H Club. Her passions were horses, traveling, being near the water and gathering people. Joan I. Burwell, 78, of DeKalb Junction, died on October 4, 2018, at her home. There will be calling hours on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, 10 am – 12 PM, the funeral service will follow. Joan is survived by her daughters, Marsha Burwell of Oregon, Virginia and her husband Kevin Murray, of Lisbon, Dawn and her husband Chris Meuten of Ogdensburg, Brenda and her husband Michael Hollars of North Carolina, Deborah Middlemiss of Maryland, Jessie Burwell and her companion Brent Brenno of Ogdensburg, a sister, Cheryl Longfellow of California, 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Rica Parras, Theresa Brown and a grandson James Burwell. Joan was born on June 11, 1940, in Potsdam, the daughter of Earl and Virginia Rheome Puirre. A marriage to James R. Burwell ended in divorce. She worked as a self-employed housekeeper. Joan was a member of the Hermon DeKalb Senior Citizen Club, a past member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Canton. She enjoyed, dancing, traveling, reading, and going to AM VETS Post 11.
