Ryan A. Slayko, 40, formally of DeKalb Junction, died on April 11, 2015, in Wisconsin. A memorial service will be at the Russell Pilgrim Holiness Church on Sunday, April 19th, 11:00 am, Pastor Charles Colton officiating. Burial will be in Hermon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Gretchen G. Berger
Gretchen G. Berger, 76, formally of Russell, died on March 27, 2015 at her home in Michigan. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 2nd, 7 – 9 PM. The funeral service will be on April 3rd, at 11 am at the funeral home, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating. A graveside service will be June 1st, 2 PM at Beech Plains Cemetery. She is survived by her sons, Terry and his wife Linda Berger of Mattawan, Michigan, Lawrence Berger of Paw Paw, Michigan, Steven Berger and fiancé Lauri Taylor of Lawton, Michigan, daughters, Linda and her husband Michael Walrath of Russell, Debra and her husband William Peterson of Gobles, Michigan, brothers, Frederick and his wife Nancy Parrow of Russell, Larry and Carol Parrow of Hastings, Michigan, sisters, Kathleen and her husband William Gonyea of Hermon, Sally and her husband Norman Marble of Augusta, Michigan, Betty and her husband Dean Kerr of Fine, 11 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sons, Ricky Berger, Gary Berger, brothers, Bruce Parrow, David Parrow, sisters, Sharron Welch, and Bonnie Sue Parrow. Gretchen was born on December 21, 1938 in Russell, the daughter of Wesley and Marjorie Billings Parrow. She married Gene B. Berger on July 21, 1956 at the Canton Methodist Church with Reverend A. Leslie Potter officiating, he predeceased her on March 23, 2003. She was a homemaker and previously was a machine operator at Plastic Engineering in Portage, Michigan. Gretchen was a member of the AMVETS Post 11, DeKalb Junction, the DeKalb Hermon Senior Citizens Club, a social member of the Russell Volunteer Fire Department. She loved crafts especially woodcrafts, gardening and sewing. Contributions can be made to the Russell Volunteer Fire Department.
Beatrice A. McMartin
Beatrice A. McMartin, 74, of DeKalb Junction, died on March 13, 2015 at James Square Nursing Home, Syracuse. A memorial service will be on, Saturday, March 28, 2015 , 11:00 am at the funeral home, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating, burial will follow in Union Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki A. McMartin and her husband Keven Yankus of Alger, Michigan, brothers, Gerald and his wife Patricia Ramsey of Las Vegas, Nevada, Donald and Margaret Ramsey of Alabama, a sister, Jean and her husband Thomas Perry of Syracuse, half sisters, Barbara and her husband Lynn Gotham of Florida, Sue and her husband Robert O’Shea of Canton, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Cheryl A. McMartin, a grandson, Matthew McMartin, brothers, Ronald Ramsey, Frank LaRose, sisters, Linda Dufore and Bonnie LaRose. Beatrice was born on December 5, 1940 in Parishville, the daughter of John and Beatrice Kerr Ramsey. She married William F. McMartin on July 2, 1960 at the home of Clarence Gardner with the Reverend Bower officiating, he predeceased her on February 19, 2010. She was a homemaker and mother. Beatrice was a member of the Old DeKalb United Methodist Church, the DeKalb Historical Association, DeKalb Hermon Senior Citizen Club, Russell Senior Citizen Club and was on the Board of the Union Cemetery. “B” (Beatrice) loved quilting, gardening, reading, decorating cakes and braiding rugs. Carl J. Brunet
Carl J. Brunet, 87, formally of Hermon, died on February 21, 2015 at Maplewood Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. A graveside service will be on July 18, 2015, 11 am at St. Henry’s Cemetery, Father Stephen Rocker officiating, a luncheon will follow the service at the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Elaine, a daughter Carolyn and her husband Lloyd (Butch) Hadden of Winter Haven, Florida, sons, Randy and his wife Vicki Brunet of Edwards, Ritchie Brunet of Hermon, a sister Alida Doud of Fairport, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Carl was born on April 27, 1927 in Hermon, the son of Joseph H. and Pauline I. Baker Brunet Jr. He graduated from Hermon High School in 1945. Carl married Elaine J. Barr on November 5, 1949 at St. James Church Rectory, Gouverneur, Father Divine officiating. He ran a milk route and other hauling which was purchased in 1948, went to work for Town Highway Department in Hermon, spring 1951. Fall of November, 1951 he purchased farm and drove school bus for Hermon District. He worked for the County Department and was an Assessor for the Town of Hermon for five years. Carl worked part time for Roger McBath at Robinson’s Farm Equipment of Canton before 1979. He was a truck driver and did machinery set up for Dragroon Equipment in Canton until his retirement in 1992. Carl was a member of St. Henry’s Church and St. James Church. He loved dancing, reading the newspaper, farming, tinkering in his shop and being busy. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Cyrus “Cy” W. Weller
Cyrus W. Weller, 89, of DeKalb Junction, died on January 31, at Canton Potsdam Hospital. Calling hours will be February 3rd, 11 AM – 2 PM, a funeral service will be at 2 PM, Pastor Pedro Morales officiating. Burial will be in Morley Cemetery, Morley on June 12, 2015 at 2:00 PM. He is survived by his children, Ricky Weller of Clearwater, Texas, Michael Weller of Rensselaer Falls, Ronald Church of Ohio, Joseph Weller of Richville, Donna Merithew of Houston, Texas, Karen and her husband Raymond Austin of Fine, Deborah Waugh of Thomasville, North Carolina, Kathy and her husband Tim Gillespie of Stafford, Kimberly Weller of Watertown, Pamela Hendrick of Richfield Springs, 25 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son Chris Weller, daughters, Cyra Jean Weller, Christina Weller, Mary Weller and siblings, Harry, Henry, Sherman, George, Viola and Laura Bullock and Warren Weller. Cyrus was born on February 21, 1925 in Hopkinton, New York, the son of Warren and Eva Brown Weller. He was in the United States Navy from 1944 -1946, while in the Navy he served on an attack transport, USS Menard which was part of the “Magic Carpet Fleet” in Pearl Harbor. He married Eudora Northup on November 11, 1943 at the Morley Methodist Church, she predeceased him on February 21, 1963, he then married Donna McCollum in October of 1965, and she predeceased him in 1984. Cy was a steel fabricator at St. Joseph’s Zinc Mine in Pierrepont for 38 years until his retirement in 1987. He was a past volunteer fireman at the DeKalb Junction Volunteer Fire Department, and was a founding member of the Morley Volunteer Fire Department. Cy enjoyed restoring automobiles, logging, hunting and fishing. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to AMVETS Post 11, DeKalb Junction, New York, 13630.
Reta D. Reed
Reta D. Reed, 84, of Richville, died on January 13, 2015 at Gouverneur Hospital. There will be a graveside service on May 9, 2015, 10:00 am at Maple Grove Cemetery, Richville, Pastor Karen Taylor officiating. She is survived by her husband Paul R. Reed, sons Dorwin and his wife Pamela Gore of Gouverneur, Richard and his wife Colleen Reed of Gouverneur, Roger and his wife Donna Reed of Canton, a daughter Amy Jo and her husband Michael Weil of Potsdam, a sister June and her husband Keith Walrath of Gouverneur, grandchildren, Jamie Varney, Alexander Weil, T.J. Gore, Bethany Gore, Christopher Reed, Jason Reed, Travis Reed, Ashley Constance, and Connor Reed, great grandchildren, Holden Varney and Lia Constance, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Marion Woods. Reta was born on May 20, 1930 in Nicholville, New York, the daughter of Ernest and Dorothy Briggs Durant. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School, and Rome School of Business. She married H. Dorwin Gore in 1948, he died in 1960, and then she married Paul Reed on February 6, 1961, Rev. Brown officiating at the parsonage. Reta was an administrative assistant at BOCES Southwest Tech., Fowler, prior to that she worked for Gouverneur High School as a secretary of the Health and Athletic Department, Gouverneur Savings and Loan as a teller,and at John Rouse Construction as a stenographer. She loved playing games with her grandkids, sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking cookies and pies, she was an avid reader. Claude M. Livingston
Claude M. Livingston, 73, of DeKalb Junction died on December 23, 2014, at Canton Potsdam Hospital. There will be no services. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte R., daughters, Lori and her husband Dan Gilbert of Edwardsville, Lisa and her husband Lyle Bishop of Fowler, a brother Gary and his wife Betty Livingston, DeKalb Junction, sisters, Judith and her husband Edward Dubrule of Richville, Betty Jones of St. Augustine, Florida, grandchildren, Eugene Bishop and Connor Bishop, several nieces and nephews. Claude was born on October 19, 1941 in Ogdensburg, New York, the son of Earl and Norma Jean Simms Livingston. He married Charlotte Fuller on October 26, 1962 at the Gouverneur Methodist Church, Reverend Stanley Brown officiating. He was a farmer on the family farm from 1957 – 1992. He enjoyed draft horses, tractor pulling, hunting and fishing. Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Foundation.
Kenneth W. Fredette
Kenneth W. Fredette, 60, of Canton, died on December 22, at Riverledge Health Care Facility. There will be no services. He is survived by his wife, Leola L. Fredette, his father, Clifton Fredette of North Granville, daughters, Kara Fredette of Potsdam, Jessica and her husband Kori Eckel of Richville, Kaitlyn Fredette of Hermon, brothers, Jeffrey and his wife Stacy Fredette of Granville, Dean and his wife Michelle Fredette of Hampton, sisters, Pamela and her husband Jim Shova of Kingsburg, Tina Duel of Middletown Springs, Vermont, Robin and her husband Rodney Taylor of Chatsworth, California, Tammy Lampkins of Glens Falls, grandchildren, Trevor Patterson, Tanner Patterson, Kendall Patterson, Hunter Eckel, several nieces and nephews. Kenneth was born on August 12, 1954 in Granville, the son of Clifton and L. Jessie Martin Fredette, he graduated from Granville High School. He married Leola Donaldson on August 9, 1975, at the United Methodist Church in Canton. He was a farmer and loved doing carpentry and word puzzles. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the charity of ones choice.
Beulah M. Davis
Beulah M. Davis, 86, of Hermon, died at her home, December 18, 2014. She was born in the Town of Pierrepont, the daughter of Leon and Edith Fifield Enslow. She married John Davis on December 12, 1959 in the Methodist Church by Richard Northup. Beulah had three children Fama and Nelson Carpenter, John Spicer (predeceased) and Mickey Stiles, two grandchildren, Michael and Christine VanHouse and Tiffany Spicer,granddaughter Michelle VanHouse (predeceased), two great grandchildren Ashlyn and Sophia Spicer, daughter of the heart, Kathy Carpenter. She attended Hermon School, she was a secretary for 9 years at Kraft foods, ran the Davis Adult Home until retiring and sold Avon for 10 years. She was a cancer survivor. Beulah was a member of the Hermon Ladies Auxiliary for 54 years, holding the offices of President, Secretary, Chaplin and 35 years as the treasurer, past president of St. Lawrence County Auxiliary, past member of O.E.S., Hermon, Hermonites Home Bureau Chairman for 17 years, the DeKalb Hermon Senior Citizens Club, The Friday Girls and past member of the Hermon Volunteer Rescue Squad. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and camping. There will be no services, in lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
Leona M. Holland
Leona M. Holland, 79, of Heuvelton, died on December 13, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. Calling hours will be Wednesday, December 17, 2 -4 and 7-9 PM, at the funeral home. A funeral service will December 18, 1:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church, Hermon, Pastor Robert Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Hermon Cemetery, Hermon. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Lucille and Teri Thompson of Chataguay, brothers, Gaylord Paro Jr. of Star Lake, Albert and his wife Lynn Paro of Mustang, Oklahoma, Charles and his wife, Alicia Paro of Canasota, sisters, Connie Cole of Sodus, Pauline Riddell of DeGrasse, Beatrice Peck of Heuvelton, who was also her caregiver, Sharron Steele of Star Lake, grandchildren, Bethany and her husband Jeremy Lynn, Aaron Thompson, Mark Thompson, Joel Thompson, Jonathan and his wife, Katie Thompson, Seth Thompson, Nathaniel and his wife Kirsten Thompson, Peter Thompson, Philip Thompson, Matthew Thompson, Benjamin Thompson, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Grace Holland, brothers, James Paro, Kenneth Paro and a sister, Thelma Denney. Leona was born on July 6, 1935 in the Town of Russell, the daughter of Gaylord and Jane Eells Paro. She attended Knox Memorial Central School. She married Harlow Holland on November 17, 1954 at the Gouverneur Methodist Church Parsonage by the Reverend Frank Brown, he predeceased her on July 1, 2009. Leona and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm in DeKalb Junction, she also previously worked at Aiello’s and McCadam’s. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hermon and a past member of the Rebekha Lodge. Leona loved making cakes, crocheting, doing ceramics, reading and making jigsaw puzzles.
