Ann T. Bevins

Ann T. Bevins, 63, of Potsdam, died on June 16, 2024 at the Canton Potsdam Hospital.  There will be a private service. Ann is survived by her mother, Mary Bevins of Canton, son, Edward Thompson of Potsdam, a sister Marie and her husband Tim Daly, her brother Robert Bevins of Tennessee, her companion John Measheaw, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her, brother Edward Bevins. She was born on December 4, 1960 in Potsdam, the daughter of the late, Edward O. Bevins and Mary Nickerson Bevins. Ann was a solderer at Compass in Ogdensburg. Ann was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Potsdam.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, flower arranging, and crafting.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.  

 

Arthur E. Green 09/01/2022

Arthur E. Green Arthur E. Green,80, of DeKalb, died on September 1, 2022, at Canton Potsdam Hospital.  Services will be private, and burial will be at Hermon Cemetery, Hermon, NY.  Arthur is survived by his wife of 59 loving years, Leona, his son Arthur Green Jr. of DeKalb, his daughter Patricia Green of DeKalb, his sister Marian and her husband Kermit Morgan of Canton, granddaughters, Gabriel Green-Todd, and Harley Green-Coffey, both of DeKalb, several nieces and nephews.  Arthur was born on April 23, 1942, in Ogdensburg, the son of the late Everett and Eunice Holland Green.  He graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School in 1962.  Arthur married Leona Strate on August 31, 1963, at the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church, with Reverend Best officiating. He was a past member of the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church. Arthur worked on his family farm his whole life because he loved working the land. He always took pride in the fact that his farm was well taken care of.  He also drove school bus for Hermon DeKalb Central School until his retirement in 1977. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the DeKalb Junction Volunteer Fire Department. 

Aileen I. Vincent-Barwood 02/20/2022

Aileen Vincent-Barwood passed peacefully through the Veil in her sleep on Sunday, February 20th, surrounded with love. In her 98th year of an adventurous life, the writer was ready to end her story.

Born to the late Harriett and George Walton of Toronto, Aileen attended Moulton College Finishing School before volunteering for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a wireless radio operator. In the military she met the love of her life, E. A. Vincent-Barwood, a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. After WWII, Aileen and Vince married and attended Mount Allison University.  Shortly after graduating they moved to Ethiopia.  Over their 75 years together, their travels took them to the Middle East, New York State’s Hudson Valley, West Africa, Northern New York, the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, New England, and finally back to Canton for their later snowbird years. 

A lifelong journalist, Aileen started out as a foreign correspondent for the CBC and the Toronto Daily Star, ultimately becoming the editor of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer in the 1970s. She believed that small hometown newspapers are the backbone of our nation’s free press, and our freedom. She authored three books: North Country Editor, a compilation of her “Grasse Roots” editorial columns; This Sweet Place – Island Living and Other Adventures, a chronicle of winters spent in their home on Exuma, Bahamas, illustrated by Vince; and A Murderous Thirst – Death Comes to the Adirondacks, an environmental murder mystery. Additionally, Aileen wrote numerous short stories and articles for various magazines, and volunteered as an English tutor at a women’s prison throughout her 80’s. An avid gardener, lover of dogs, and devout Unitarian, Ai was happy pulling weeds, discussing physics, championing the less fortunate, and advocating for human rights.

Aileen was predeceased by her brother, Harris Walton, and in February 2021, by her beloved Vince. She is survived by her children Scott Vincent-Barwood, Jennifer Vincent-Barwood and husband John McCloskey, bonus son Thomas Gardner and companion Terri Chalone; grandchildren Connie Takeshita and husband Jason Takeshita, Aubri Vincent-Barwood, Zachariah Knight and wife Elizabeth Herrington Knight, and Zoë Knight; her great-grandchildren Olivia, Scott, and Dane Takeshita, and Evelyn Knight; and many friends of all ages.

A memorial service for Aileen and Vince will be held this summer.  For those so inclined, remembrance contributions may be given to the Canton Free Library, Potsdam Humane Society, or North Country Public Radio. In Aileen’s memory, take your dog for a walk, read a banned book, enjoy sunrise with a good cup of tea, or marvel at the quantum universe.

Alexander W. Hamilton, 64, of Harrisville, died unexpectedly on October 3, 2020.  There will be a Celebration of Life Ceremony at his brother’s home, October 17, 2020 from 1 – 5 PM, 676 CR 19, Hermon, New York 13652.  Alex is survived by his mother Genevieve Hamilton, Edwards, his son Brandon Shrewsberry of Marcy, brothers, Richard and wife Jean Hamilton of Hermon, Alan Hamilton of Heuvelton, Asa Hamilton of Hermon, a sister, Kay Cornell of Edwards, several nieces and nephews. He was born on October 13, 1955 in the Gouverneur, to the late Herbert Hamilton and Genevieve Paro Hamilton. He graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School in 1974.  He was a laborer with Union Local 322, Massena. Alex was a member of the Sons of the American Legion 317.  He enjoyed dancing, playing golf, hunting in Fire Falls, traveling, the outdoors, being with people and making them laugh. Anna F. Grant, 92, formerly of DeKalb Junction, died on October 4, 2020, at Canton Potsdam Hospital.  There will be a graveside service on, October 10th, 2:00 PM at Hermon Cemetery, Pastor Joe Weidler officiating.  Anna is survived by her husband of 72 years, Clarridge “Don” Grant, sons, Thomas and Emily Grant, Lisbon, Bruce and Bonnie Grant, DeKalb Junction, a daughter, Kitty and Steven Cook, Massena, brothers, Orin and Bonnie Thomas, Colton, Bing and Betsy Thomas, Louisville, a sister, Kay and Robert O’Brian, Lowville, 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Steven Grant, brothers Allen, Joseph, Glenn and Francis Thomas, and a great grandson Grant Woodrow.  Anna was born on July 2, 1928 in the Town of Pierrepont, to the late Roy and Katherine Dorothy Thomas. After graduating from high school she graduated from the Wallace Business School in Ogdensburg. She married Don on July 21, 1948 at the United Methodist Church in Colton.  Anna was the secretary to the director of the ARC of Canton until the late 70’s.  She was a past member of the United Methodist Church in Colton and loved being a homemaker, reading and knitting. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Maplewood Nursing Home or the charity of one’s choice.

Albert “Neil” Wilson, 80, of DeKalb, died on February 1, 2019, at his home.  Calling hours will be Wednesday, February 6, 3 – 5 PM, the funeral service will follow, Reverend Robert Schrimer officiating.  There will be a private burial in the spring at Hermon Cemetery. After the service there will a gathering at the DeKalb Junction Fire Hall. Neil is survived by his sons, Thomas Wilson of Potsdam, Dale and his wife Sharon Wilson of DeKalb, Steven and his wife Elizabeth Wilson of New Hampshire, Jerry and his wife Ann Wilson of DeKalb, daughters, Cindy and her husband Joe Kelley of DeKalb, Susan and her husband David Corbine of Canton, brothers, John and his wife Nancy Wilson of DeKalb, Gary Wilson of Syracuse, Larry and his wife Linda Wilson of Hermon, Lyle Wilson of East Syracuse, a sister, Barbara Wilson of North Carolina, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Delbert Wilson, and a sister Elma Poole.  Neil was born on March 13, 1938 the son of the late, Jacob and Bertha Pelkey Wilson, in DeKalb. He married Sally Beasaw on April 23, 1955 at their home, she died in 1995. Neil was a farmer all his life at his farm on the Maple Ridge Road, he was also very proud to be part of constructing the seaway, lastly he worked for the Town of DeKalb Highway Department.  He loved his family, hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.  He was a 30 + year member if the Raripaco Club. Angelina M. Donaldson, 8, of Canton, became one of God’s angels on April 1, 2018. Calling hours will be April 14, 2018 at 12 – 2 PM, the funeral service will follow at 2 PM, at the funeral home, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating. Angelina is survived by her loving parents, Diane Donaldson of Canton, Larry Donaldson of Canton, her grandfather Vernon E. Miller and his companion Lisa LaBrake of Fine, her brother, Larry J. Donaldson of Canton, step brothers, Casey Donaldson and his fiancé Kay Zimmer of Canton, Jonathan Donaldson of Plattsburgh, step sister Brandy Matejcik of Stockholm, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Leslie W. and Helen L. Donaldson, and Beverly Miller. Angelina was born on February 25, 2010, in Ogdensburg, New York. She was a 2nd grade student at Banford Elementary School in Canton. She was a member of the girl scouts. She loved animals, especially her cats Gizmo and Smokey, playing Minecraft, drawing and watching You Tube. Anyone who knew Angelina would tell you she was a loving child with a contagious smile.

August M. Atkins, 69, of DeKalb Junction, died on July 11, 2017, at Community Hospital in Syracuse. There will be a memorial service at a later date. He is survived by his son, Matthew Atkins of DeKalb, a granddaughter, Sophie Atkins, a half-brother, David Atkins of California, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased, by siblings, Phillip Atkins, Regina (Dolly) White, Jeannet (Midge) Atkins, and Rose (Bonnie) Miller. August was born on August 13, 1947 in Olean, the son of the late John James and Rosa McElfresh Atkins, he graduated from Wellsville High School. He married Priscilla Lambert which ended in divorce. August was a truck mechanic for McCadem Cheese in Heuvelton and drove truck for Relco. He was a past member of the NRA, and the DeKalb Grange. He enjoyed gardening and puttering around his house. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice.

She is survived by her husband, John M. Fuller, sons John M. and his wife Carol Fuller of Lutz, Florida, Timothy F. and his wife Kathy Fuller of Pyrites, Paul D. Fuller of Lisbon, a daughter Joy I. and her husband Richard Prince of San Antonio, Texas, a sisters, Beatrice Charland of Malone, Pearl and her husband John Woodin of Poughkeepsie, Jeanne Zemko of Fort Myers, Florida, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Violet Perrault, Gilda Streeter, Yvonne Harrington, Marie Derosia and Margaret Gregory. Almeda was born on on August 4, 1932 in Churabusco, New York, the daughter of the late Francis and Viola Spoor Derosia. She graduated from Henry Abbott Technical School in Danbury, Connecticut as a licensed practical  nurse. She married John M. Fuller, on August 10, 1950 in Ellenburg Corners, New York. Almeda was a licensed practical nurse in New Milford, Connecticut until her retirement in 1993 and was a member of St. Henry’s Church, DeKalb Junction. Arthur W. Ploof Sr., 99, of Newton Falls, died at his home surrounded by his loving family on July 18, 2013. There will be no services. Arthur is survived by his children, Arthur W. Ploof Jr. and his wife Janet, of Cranberry Lake, Carol Wacholz, of Chicago, Lee Ploof, of Tennessee, Gloria Kapp and her husband Gary of Montana, John H. Ploof of Rochester and Donna Mattingly of Newton Falls, 9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Ploof, sisters, Elsie Muller and Laura Charland and a granddaughter Terri Lee Payne. Arthur was born on May 6, 1914 in St. Regis Falls, the son of William and Mae Farmer Ploof. He married Catherine Patnode on June 6, 1937 in Piercefield, NY; she died on October 31, 1994. Arthur was a tower boss at Newton Falls Paper Mill until his retirement. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, bowling and hunting.
