Beloved husband, father and son Edward Fischer passed away peacefully at the age of 86 following a short illness on March. 15, 2018. He is survived by his son Steven J Fischer, daughter in law, Pamela Fischer and granddaughter Anna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward J and Minnie Buys Fischer and his wife Virginia Flight Fischer.
Ed lived a life of service to his country and to his community. He was a career military officer, retiring from the Army in 1969 after twenty years of active duty. A decorated veteran, he received the Good Conduct Medal with two knots, the National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, the Republic of Vietnam campaign ribbon, and the Meritorious Unit Citation. In 1969, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, which is reserved for members of the armed services who commit acts of heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service. He met his late wife Virginia Fischer while serving at Ft. Drum (then Camp Drum) and after marriage lived in France and Germany before returning to DeKalb Junction. Married for 56 years, Ed and Virginia will be forever remembered for their contributions to DeKalb, most notably the creation of senior citizen housing, the historical museum and chairing the Herman-DeKalb alumni association for decades.

Upon retirement from the army, he served as a Deputy Sheriff for St. Lawrence County for 15 years where he was known for his kindness to all, including people who were processed under his care. His commitment to service didn’t end with retirement and he spent the next 30 years as an active volunteer in his community. Having volunteered for the Radio Emergency Citizens Action Teams (REACT) while in the military he continued providing emergency service in DeKalb as a volunteer fireman. He served as chaplain of the DeKalb Senior Citizens association, holding membership for more than ten years. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, assisting at the nutrition center and advocated on several occasions for its continued service to the community. One of his proudest moments was being recognized as St. Lawrence County’s New York State Senior Citizen’s of the year in 2015. He also enjoyed the fellowship of the church community as a member of the DeKalb Methodist church.
Ed loved fishing, following navy ships on his Ham radio, playing flight simulator video games and keeping up with community affairs. He moved to Washington state in December 2016 to be with his son’s family where he enjoyed sampling the many ethnic foods in the area as well as the local breweries. He recently visited elementary schools, in full uniform, to describe his experiences as a veteran. Ed will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.
Visiting hours will be from noon-2 pm on Saturday, March 31st, at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home in Dekalb Junction. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association or the Hermon Rescue Squad.

Elaine M. Dusharm, 84, of DeKalb Junction, died on February 2nd, 2017, at Canton Potsdam Hospital. Calling hours will be, Monday, February 6th, 1- 3 PM, the funeral service will follow at 3 PM, Pastor John Frary officiating, at the funeral home, burial will be in the spring at the Hermon Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Duane and his wife Jo Dusharm of Philadelphia, daughters Donna Russell and Willis Shattuck of DeKalb Junction, Donita McIntosh and Bob Sweeney of Dannemora, 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, a nephew Elwood Fanning. She was predeceased by a son, Douglas Dusharm, a grandson, Joseph Russell, and a brother, Richard Fanning. Elaine was born on March 20, 1932 in Russell, the daughter of the late Wayne and Lois Wells Fanning, she graduated from the DeKalb High School in 1949. Also in 1949, she married Lester James Dusharm, he predeceased her on January 6, 1983. She was a retail clerk at ARC in Kingman, Arizona. She loved being with her family. She enjoyed playing cards, going out to eat, and being at “The River”. Everett M. Risley, 90, formerly of DeKalb Junction and currently in Canastota, died Tuesday evening February 2, 2016, in Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton. Born in De Kalb Junction, on January 17, 1926, he was the son of Herbert N. and Laura Belle Stone Risley. A resident of this area for the past twenty-seven years, Everett was educated in De Kalb Junction schools. Prior to his retirement, Everett was employed with Fremac Marine Sales in Lakeport, previously with the former N. G. Deppoliti and Sons, Inc. of Canastota and owned and operated an automotive garage and dairy farm in De Kalb Junction. He loved playing guitar and working with anything mechanical and was of the Methodist faith. Surviving are his three sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Kathy Risley of Canastota, Rick and Lisa Risley of Oneida and Steven and Laney Risley of St. Augustine, Florida; fifteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sons, Charles in 1987, Greg in 2011, Keith at birth, his daughter, Lisa at birth and two brothers, Obed and Gaylord Risley. Funeral services will be held 1 PM, Saturday at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home, De Kalb Junction, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating. Interment will be made in Union Cemetery, De Kalb Junction. Friends may call at the funeral home, 11 AM to 1 PM, Saturday, prior to the funeral service. Edith Mae Cook, 94, formally of Hermon, died on October 28, 2013, at Maplewood United Helpers. A funeral service will be on November 1, 2013 at 2 PM, Father Douglas Lucia officiating. Edith is survived by her son and daughter in law, Steve and Diana Cook, of Hermon, granddaughters, Rachael and her husband George White of Hermon and Christina Cook of Hermon, great grandchildren, Kaylee White, Miranda White, David White and Payton White, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter Jeanne Cook, brothers, Joseph, Morris, Ernie, Ted and Francis Brunet, sisters, Genevieve Stowell, Theresa Perrin, Marion Roy, Agatha Toomey, Alma Stowell, and Cecil Breman. She was born on May 29, 1919, the daughter of Joseph and Edesel Thesier Brunett. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School. She married John H. Cook on November 24, 1951 in DeKalb, he died July 25, 1996. Louise owned and operated Hermon Nursing Home for several years, and then she cared for clients from Sunmount of Tupper Lake at her home. She was a former parishioner at St. Henry’s Church. Edith Mae loved to read, sew, played cards and cook. Contributions can be made to Maplewood United Helpers.

She was predeceased by a son, Bruce Evans Perrault, and brothers Howard and Ottto Hughes. Edna was born on January 5, 1926 in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Gilbert and Clara Meinhardt Hughes. She married Clarence Perrault on October 22, 1949; he died April 6, 1979. Edna was a homemaker, and a housekeeper for St. Henry’s Church’s Pastors. She was a parishioner of St. Henry’s Church, a member of St. Henry’s Altar Rosary Society, and the DeKalb Junction Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She loved taking care of her grandchildren, cooking, going for walks, singing and reading the bible. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Calling hours will be Friday, August 3rd, 6 – 8 PM, the funeral service will be Saturday, August 4th, 11:00 am at the Old DeKalb Methodist Church, Old DeKalb,Reverend William Masters officiating, burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvelton. Elma is survived by her son, Dean and Linda Marshall, Heuvelton, daughter Carol and James Moore, Michigan, a brother, Stanley Holland, Lorraine, sisters June Gabriel, Rochester, and Dorothea Redmond, Arizona, grandchildren, Michael Marshall, Ogdensburg, Gregory Moore, Michigan, Matthew Moore, Wisconsin, Sean and Amalia Moore, Wisconsin, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Clyde, David and James Holland, sisters, Helen Weegar and Ruth Payne. Elma was born on July 14, 1927 in the Town of DeKalb, the daughter of David and Pearl Weatherup Holland. She graduated from Gouverneur High School and then attended A. Barton Hepburn Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her registered nursing degree. Elma married Dean Marshall on April 3, 1949 in the Town of DeKalb; he predeceased her in December 1977. Elma started her career in pediatric nursing and then became the head nurse in the operating room at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital, she worked for Dr. Whitmyer in Ogdensburg, and she then became the head nursing administrator at Cedar’s Nursing Home, her last position before retirement was a nurse for St. Lawrence County Public Health in Canton. She was a member of the Old DeKalb Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star in Heuvelton, and the DeKalb Historical Association. Elma enjoyed rug hooking and Facebook.
