Joan Anson

Joan Anson, 85 of Richville, died on February 3, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family.  There will be no services. Joan is survived by her sons, Francis and his wife Donna Anson of DeKalb Junction, Brian Anson of Richville, Charles Anson of Romulus, NY, daughters, Karen Blackmer of Buffalo, Christine Schieb of Henrietta, Darlene Benz of Rochester, Elizabeth and her husband Ali Naqvi of Katy, TX, brothers, Richard Sheffield of FL, Ronald Sheffield of Andover, a sister Marie Chaffee of GA, 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Melody Donohue, siblings, Dorothy, Virginia, Geraldine, John, Robert, Barbara, Charles, Patricia, George, Lawrence, Donald, Carol, Marie and Gerald. She was born on March 4,1938 in Brockport, to the late, George and Marie Donahue Sheffield. She graduated from high school in Brockport, NY. She married Lee Donohue which ended in divorce, she then married Francis E. Anson in Rochester in 1960, he died on November 14, 1993. Joan was a collator at a book binding company in Rochester, later in her life she was a housekeeper for many years. She was a member of the DeKalb Hermon Senior Citizens Club, AARP, where she was active in fighting for senior’s benefits, and the Red Hat Society. She loved to play bingo, dance, play cards, make puzzles, travel, sing and music.

Gordon W. Poole

Gordon W. Poole, 89, of DeKalb Junction, died on January 14, 2024, at the Auburn Rehab and Nursing Center.  There will be a funeral service on May 24, 2024 at the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church at 9:00 am, burial will follow in Union Cemetery, DeKalb Junction.  Gordon is survived by his daughters, Deborah Bright of Winthrop, ME, Jennifer and her husband Robert Williams of Belgrade, ME, a brother, Wayne Huntress of Philadelphia, NY, grandchildren, Billy Poole, Nick Poole, Carolyn Poole, 3 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Lynn Poole, and a sister, Joyce Griffin. He was born on April 3, 1934, in Gouverneur, the son of the late, Lynn and Perciebelle Underwood Poole. He graduated from DeKalb Junction High School in 1951.  Gordon married Pearl Hutt in 1956, she died on March 3, 1998, he married Elma Wilson on January 5, 2002, she died on January 19, 2010, he married Daun Martin on November 20, 2011, she died on September 12, 2021.  Gordon was an ironworker for Local 496 Ironworkers in Clinton, ME, which included working at Alcoa and Civies Steel locally. He owned and operated Circle P Corp in Maine which was a small farm supply store.  He and his son Lynn then operated the store together including, small engine repair, and agricultural fencing. Gordon was a member of the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church, was a founding member of BSA Troop 144 Hermon-DeKalb, was also the Charter Organization Representative and treasurer, faithfully attending the monthly meetings, was a member of the Wildwood Masonic Lodge 477 in Edwards and was a past master.  He enjoyed horses, snowmobiling, motorcycling, welding, and spending time at camp.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to BSA Troop 144, 1034 Pond Road, Hermon, NY, 13652 or the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church, 4302 USH 11, DeKalb Junction, NY, 13630.

Kenneth C. Corscadden, 75, of Richville, peacefully passed to Heaven to be with his son Kasey, on December 30, 2023.  There will be calling hours on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, 1-3 and 5 -7 PM at the funeral home. The funeral service will be January 3, 2024, 10:00 am at the funeral home, Pastor David Hart officiating, burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. Ken is survived by his loving wife, Lauren “Laurie”, his daughters, Kristine and her husband Matthew Shippee of Richville, Kerry and her husband James St. Onge of Newville, PA, Katie and her husband William “Billy” Smith of DeKalb Junction, Kimberly and her husband Chris Buckner of Kansas City, Kansas, Kylie Corscadden of Richville, Kaitlin  Corscadden and her partner Mark Tripp of Richville, 18  grandchildren,  Kelsi, Samantha, Skylar, Ryan, Kodi, Makenna, Tyler, Karli, Cooper, Laura, Allison, Ashtyn, Harlow, Elizabeth, Kendal, Kinlee, Kaydence and Ryken, 2 great grandchildren, Grayson and Laneigh, his brother, Michael and Raeanne “Rae” Corscadden of RI, a sister-in-law, Maggie Corscadden of RI, several nieces and nephews, and lifetime friends. He was predeceased by his son Kasey Corscadden, brothers, Robert, William, Nelson “Jack”, Keith, and Albert “Tim” Corscadden. He was born on August 24, 1948, in Fall River, MA, the son of the late, Albert and Dorothy Robertson Corscadden. He graduated from the Bristol Agricultural High School in 1967.  He went into the Army in 1968, to Vietnam, because he loved his country. Ken married Lauren Durfee on June 20, 1975, in Westport, MA. Ken felt farming was his calling, Corscadden Family Farm was his sanctuary.  He always said, “If you take care of the farm the farm will take care of you”. It was an honor for him to take care of God’s creatures and His land. In his later years he was always overseeing the farm he loved, which included taking his grandchildren with him to inspect the fields. His greatest love was his family.  He had a special and individual bond with each and every one of his children and grandchildren.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW, was the life of the party, many times being the last to leave. You became a friend for life whether you were a round table friend at the diner, a business associate, community member or an employee.  He helped hundreds of people while expecting nothing in return.  In fact, he was proud that the last two weeks before his death, he had worked one hundred hours combining corn for a friend. Weldon C. Noble Sr., 90, of DeKalb Junction, died on December 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family.  There will be no services. He will be laid to rest in East DeKalb Cemetery. Weldon is survived by his wife Roxanna, his sons, Weldon and his wife Caroline Noble Jr. of Morristown, Wendell Noble and his partner Amy of Minnesota, Marshall and his wife Sally Noble of Canton, Michael and his wife Kelly Noble of New Hampshire, Dennis Noble of Hermon, his daughter, Dianna Noble of Michigan, his brothers, Neil Noble, and Merle and his wife Dancy Noble of DeKalb, his sister Janice Sibbits of Canton, 9 grandchildren, 13, great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Morley Noble, Harold Noble, Keith Noble, Glenn Noble, sisters, Viola Noble, Lucy Murdie and Loreen Noble. He was born on April 15,1933, in Canton, the son of the late, Loys Jessie Culbertson Noble. He married Noreen Watson which ended in divorce.  He married Roxanna Goodale on June 25,1994 at their home in DeKalb with Lay Minister Floyd Powell officiating. Weldon was a farmer and worked a Don Cook’s farm in Hermon.    He enjoyed puttering around his home, going to camp and love spending time with his children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

Carole M. Castor, 71, of Heuvelton, died on October 20, 2023, at SUNY Upstate Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.  There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 28, 2023, 1 – 4 PM at the Grace Point Wesleyan Church in Heuvelton. Carole is survived by her husband, Lyle L., daughters, Christina and her husband Brian Kunath of West Chazy, Amanda and her husband, Jeremey King of Marcellus, her sisters, Susan and her husband Curtis Bell of Macomb, Joan Sevey of Rochester, grandchildren, Ryan Kunath and Crystal Grady, Cassee Kunath and Jason LaDue Jr, Brianna Kunath, Bailey Kunath, Lance Kunath, Abigail King, great grandchildren, Diamond Miller, Paxton Kunath and Quincey Kunath, several nieces and nephews. Carole was born on April 4, 1952 the daughter of the late, George and Cora Riley Bogardus in Gouverneur. In 1970 she graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School. Carole continued her education at Canton ATC, graduating in 1973 with an Associate’s Degree in business administration.  She married Lyle Castor on her birthday, April 4, 1975 at the DePeyster Methodist Church. Carole was a housekeeper and laundress at the United Helpers Nursing Home from 1987 until her retirement in 2020.  She was a member of the Grace Point Wesleyan Church in Heuvelton. Carole loved to read, do puzzles, going to garage sales, and scrap booking.  She loved owls and her cats which she called fur babies.  But above all else, her family was her greatest love of all. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Conway Richard Nyxx Newcombe, who left us on August 24, 2023 at the tender age of seven months. Conway was loved deeply by family and friends and although Conway’s time on Earth was short, his impact on loved ones will never be forgotten. Conway had an infectious laugh and a smile that would light up the room.

 

Conway was born on January 16, 2023 in Potsdam, New York. Conway is the son of Sara Newcombe, of De Kalb Junction, New York and Patrick Thompson, of Gouverneur, New York. In addition to his parents, Conway is survived by his brother, Louis Newcombe, who absolutely adored him, half-brother Oliver Thompson; and paternal grandparents Kevin Thompson and Barb VanDyke Thompson. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Richard and Jayne Newcombe.

 

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 11:00am-1:00pm at Allen- Denesha Funeral Home, De Kalb Junction. His funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00pm at the funeral home, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating.

John Carl Holland, 65, of DeKalb, died on August 7, 2023, at his home.  There will be a graveside service on September 2, 2023, 11:00 am at the Old DeKalb Cemetery, Pastor Justin Bland officiating.  John is survived by his brothers, James E. Holland of Omaha, Nebraska, Robert G. Holland and his wife Karen of Canton, sisters, Linda R. Michaud and her husband Paul of Gouverneur, Hazel Holland of Norfolk, several nieces and nephews. John was born on September 21,1957 the son of the late, James W. and Hazel F. Bigelow in Ogdensburg. In 1976 he graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School. He was a farm worker at the Corscadden Farm in Richville, for thirty plus years. John was a member of the Richville Baptist Church.  He liked to play cards, go fishing, watch WWE wrestling and the History Channel, he was a serious coin collector and a history buff. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meals on Wheels Program.

HERMON – Funeral services for Merrill D. Finnie, 34, a resident of 104 Germain Street, Hermon, will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home in DeKalb Junction.  Burial will be held in the Hermon Cemetery following the services.  Following the services, a luncheon will be held at the Hermon Fire Hall to celebrate Merrill’s life.  Family and friends may call at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home on Monday, July 31, 2023 from 11-1 and again from 6-8 p.m.  Merrill passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at his home.

              Merrill is survived by his mother, Sonya Forbes, Hermon; his father, David Finnie and Pamela Hedrick, Gouverneur; his sisters, Christa Charland, Hermon; Clarisa Davis, Hermon and Courtney Finnie, Fishkill; his nieces and nephews, Bella Charland and Hayden and Caylin Cardinell; his paternal grandfather, William Finnie, Norwood; his paternal grandmother, Diana Putman, Hermon as well as several aunts and uncles.  Merrill was pre-deceased by his maternal grandparents Vernon and Deanna (Davis) Forbes.

              Born on February 24, 1989 to Sonya Forbes and David Finnie, Merrill graduated from Hermon-DeKalb Central School, Class of 2007.  He enjoyed working, especially at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton where he was in maintenance and when Merrill wasn’t working, he was helping his friends or enjoying the outdoors.  He loved to hunt, fish and go 4-wheeling in his spare time. Memorial donations in Merrill’s name can be made to the Hermon Rescue Squad.

Linda M. Bacon, 71, of Hermon, died on July 12, 2023, at Canton Potsdam Hospital.  There will be no services per Linda’s wishes. Linda is survived by her husband, Ward W. Bacon, her daughter Nicole S. Bacon-Ward and her husband Richie Ward, of Hermon, grandchildren, Marissa and her husband Michael Mason of Red Creek, Camryn Ward of Hermon, Makayla Bacon and her fiancé, Jason Burke of Canton, Dakotah and her husband Daniel Stroda of Clarksville, TN, one great grandchild, Wrenleigh Stroda, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Ward W. Bacon Jr., her brothers, Jerry Cameron, Richard Cameron, and Danny Cameron. Linda was born on April 12, 1952 the daughter of the late, Richard (Bud) and Blanche Johnson Cameron in Potsdam. In 1970 she graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School. She married Ward Bacon on July 11, 1970 at St. Henry’s Church in DeKalb Junction. Linda was a direct support provider at Jefferson St Lawrence ARC, prior to that she was a cook at the Canton Day Care Center, everyone called her Linda Cooker.  She was a past member of the Hermon Rescue Squad.  She loved watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, she enjoyed fishing, and following local sports teams. Tennille E. Hayes, 46, of Hermon, died on June 30, 2023, at Canton Potsdam Hospital.  There will be calling hours, Friday, July 7, 2023, 1-3 PM, a funeral service will follow at 3 PM at the funeral home, Reverend Robert Morehouse officiating. Tennille is survived by her husband Marc Hayes, sons, Isaiah Hayes and his fiancé Hannah Degraw, of Hermon, Grant Hayes of Hermon, a daughter, Gabrielle Barton of Brockport, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Grant and Cathy Hayes of Chittenango, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, McKenna Hayes. Born on July 29, 1976 in Canandaigua, she graduated from the Naples High School. She married Marc Hayes on November 8, 2003 in Naples.  Tennille was a certified nurse’s aide at Canton Potsdam Hospital for the last nine years.  She was held in high regard by her colleagues at the hospital.  She loved spending time with her family and friends, and enjoyed reading.
