Dr. David M. Speer

Dr. David M. Speer, 86 of Canton, NY passed away from this life on April 18, 2024 at the Plattsburg, NY Hospital.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

David is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Speer and three sons, and their wives and 6 grandchildren and his brother Jack Speer.

He was predeceased by parents; Hilda and Webster Speer DVM, his sister Virginia and brother William.

David Graduated from Canton Highschool in 1956 and then received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Purdue University in 1964.  He returned to Canton to open the Canton Animal Hospital and practiced until 2005 when he sold the practice then continued to work for the practice for 14 more years.

David was active in many Veterinary Societies and professional organizations over the years. He enjoyed fishing and always tried to incorporate a fishing trip into any vacation, which were few and far between.  David was a voracious reader with an extensive library.  He also enjoyed gardening and planted many trees throughout his life.  He enjoyed nature and the outdoors, had a pragmatic approach to conservation and didn’t waste time or resources with anything he did.  He always thought of his family before himself and was a great provider.  He was also very generous to his friends and extended family and donated to many causes.

In lieu of flowers any contribution may be made to the Canton Rescue Squad, 77 Riverside Drive, Canton, NY.

  1. Dr. Speer was a truly wonderful Vet. He would wait and see how an animal did instead of rushing into expensive tests or surgeries. He was never wrong with our dog or cats. Just remarkable. A kind, caring man. We are sorry for your loss.

  4. Pat and family: I was sadden to learn of Dave’s passing. I am sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working for Dave in 1981. He was a great vet, man and mentor. I learned a lot from him. He had a no nonsense method, get the job done and move on to the next task approach. May he rest in peace.

  7. So sorry to hear of Doc Speers’ passing. I remember when his office was on Riverside drive. No appointment necessary, you just showed up and he would stay until all were seen. When my husband and I would see him out somewhere he would always ask how our Danes were doing.

  8. My condolences to Dr.Speer’s family. Many years ago I remember my father, Walton, endorsing Dave’s professional services when he had a dairy. My dad often mentioned Dave’s work and ongoing friendship. He was held in high regards.
