Landon J. Hall

Landon J. Hall, 76, of Russell, died on November 19, 2023, at Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital.  There will be calling hours on Friday, November 24, from 4-6 PM. There will be a graveside service with military honors at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Richville, Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 11:00 am. Landon is survived by his wife Lois, his son Keith Hall of Rochester, his daughter, Amanda and her husband Jake Rowley of Russell, his brother, Martin Hall and his life partner, Joyce Jones of Florida, his sister, Joan and her husband John Metz of Florida, grandchildren, Bella Mary Lou Hall, Grace Aubrey Hall, Madelyn Elle Rowley, Cole Everett Rowley, a brother-in-law and sister- in- law, Ernie and Cheryl Stuhldreher, nieces, Risa Oliver, Stefani Brown, Vicky Martin, and Tammy Brosowsky. He was born on February 12, 1947, in Gouverneur, the son of the late, Donald and Keitha Jeffers Hall. In 1965 he graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School, and continued his education at Alfred State University, graduating in 1967 with an Associate Degree in data processing. Following college, he was in the United States Army in Vietnam where he received an army commendation medal for heroism in the Republic of Vietnam on May 9, 1969. He married Lois Stuhldreher on May 13, 1972 in Lindenhurst, New York. Landon was employed for many years as a computer programmer at IBM in Rochester, coming home one day announcing he was retiring and became an over the road truck driver, which was a career he had always wanted to do. He last worked for Morey Enterprises in Brushton, N.Y.    He was a member of the Gamma Theta Gamma fraternity, and the St. Vincent DePaul Church in Churchville.  He was very involved in his church, working Bingo and the church carnival. Landon loved camping, Nascar, going to many of the tracks around the country and happy hour on the deck watching the river, with the love of his life Lois. But above all else, his family was the great love of all. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local volunteer rescue squad.

Carole M. Castor         

Carole M. Castor, 71, of Heuvelton, died on October 20, 2023, at SUNY Upstate Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.  There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 28, 2023, 1 – 4 PM at the Grace Point Wesleyan Church in Heuvelton. Carole is survived by her husband, Lyle L., daughters, Christina and her husband Brian Kunath of West Chazy, Amanda and her husband, Jeremey King of Marcellus, her sisters, Susan and her husband Curtis Bell of Macomb, Joan Sevey of Rochester, grandchildren, Ryan Kunath and Crystal Grady, Cassee Kunath and Jason LaDue Jr, Brianna Kunath, Bailey Kunath, Lance Kunath, Abigail King, great grandchildren, Diamond Miller, Paxton Kunath and Quincey Kunath, several nieces and nephews. Carole was born on April 4, 1952 the daughter of the late, George and Cora Riley Bogardus in Gouverneur. In 1970 she graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School. Carole continued her education at Canton ATC, graduating in 1973 with an Associate’s Degree in business administration.  She married Lyle Castor on her birthday, April 4, 1975 at the DePeyster Methodist Church. Carole was a housekeeper and laundress at the United Helpers Nursing Home from 1987 until her retirement in 2020.  She was a member of the Grace Point Wesleyan Church in Heuvelton. Carole loved to read, do puzzles, going to garage sales, and scrap booking.  She loved owls and her cats which she called fur babies.  But above all else, her family was her greatest love of all. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Conway Richard Nyxx Newcombe, who left us on August 24, 2023 at the tender age of seven months. Conway was loved deeply by family and friends and although Conway’s time on Earth was short, his impact on loved ones will never be forgotten. Conway had an infectious laugh and a smile that would light up the room.

 

Conway was born on January 16, 2023 in Potsdam, New York. Conway is the son of Sara Newcombe, of De Kalb Junction, New York and Patrick Thompson, of Gouverneur, New York. In addition to his parents, Conway is survived by his brother, Louis Newcombe, who absolutely adored him, half-brother Oliver Thompson; and paternal grandparents Kevin Thompson and Barb VanDyke Thompson. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Richard and Jayne Newcombe.

 

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 11:00am-1:00pm at Allen- Denesha Funeral Home, De Kalb Junction. His funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00pm at the funeral home, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating.

John C. Holland

John Carl Holland, 65, of DeKalb, died on August 7, 2023, at his home.  There will be a graveside service on September 2, 2023, 11:00 am at the Old DeKalb Cemetery, Pastor Justin Bland officiating.  John is survived by his brothers, James E. Holland of Omaha, Nebraska, Robert G. Holland and his wife Karen of Canton, sisters, Linda R. Michaud and her husband Paul of Gouverneur, Hazel Holland of Norfolk, several nieces and nephews. John was born on September 21,1957 the son of the late, James W. and Hazel F. Bigelow in Ogdensburg. In 1976 he graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School. He was a farm worker at the Corscadden Farm in Richville, for thirty plus years. John was a member of the Richville Baptist Church.  He liked to play cards, go fishing, watch WWE wrestling and the History Channel, he was a serious coin collector and a history buff. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Meals on Wheels Program.

HERMON – Funeral services for Merrill D. Finnie, 34, a resident of 104 Germain Street, Hermon, will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home in DeKalb Junction.  Burial will be held in the Hermon Cemetery following the services.  Following the services, a luncheon will be held at the Hermon Fire Hall to celebrate Merrill’s life.  Family and friends may call at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home on Monday, July 31, 2023 from 11-1 and again from 6-8 p.m.  Merrill passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at his home.

              Merrill is survived by his mother, Sonya Forbes, Hermon; his father, David Finnie and Pamela Hedrick, Gouverneur; his sisters, Christa Charland, Hermon; Clarisa Davis, Hermon and Courtney Finnie, Fishkill; his nieces and nephews, Bella Charland and Hayden and Caylin Cardinell; his paternal grandfather, William Finnie, Norwood; his paternal grandmother, Diana Putman, Hermon as well as several aunts and uncles.  Merrill was pre-deceased by his maternal grandparents Vernon and Deanna (Davis) Forbes.

              Born on February 24, 1989 to Sonya Forbes and David Finnie, Merrill graduated from Hermon-DeKalb Central School, Class of 2007.  He enjoyed working, especially at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton where he was in maintenance and when Merrill wasn’t working, he was helping his friends or enjoying the outdoors.  He loved to hunt, fish and go 4-wheeling in his spare time. Memorial donations in Merrill’s name can be made to the Hermon Rescue Squad.

Linda M. Bacon

Linda M. Bacon, 71, of Hermon, died on July 12, 2023, at Canton Potsdam Hospital.  There will be no services per Linda’s wishes. Linda is survived by her husband, Ward W. Bacon, her daughter Nicole S. Bacon-Ward and her husband Richie Ward, of Hermon, grandchildren, Marissa and her husband Michael Mason of Red Creek, Camryn Ward of Hermon, Makayla Bacon and her fiancé, Jason Burke of Canton, Dakotah and her husband Daniel Stroda of Clarksville, TN, one great grandchild, Wrenleigh Stroda, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Ward W. Bacon Jr., her brothers, Jerry Cameron, Richard Cameron, and Danny Cameron. Linda was born on April 12, 1952 the daughter of the late, Richard (Bud) and Blanche Johnson Cameron in Potsdam. In 1970 she graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School. She married Ward Bacon on July 11, 1970 at St. Henry’s Church in DeKalb Junction. Linda was a direct support provider at Jefferson St Lawrence ARC, prior to that she was a cook at the Canton Day Care Center, everyone called her Linda Cooker.  She was a past member of the Hermon Rescue Squad.  She loved watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, she enjoyed fishing, and following local sports teams. Tennille E. Hayes, 46, of Hermon, died on June 30, 2023, at Canton Potsdam Hospital.  There will be calling hours, Friday, July 7, 2023, 1-3 PM, a funeral service will follow at 3 PM at the funeral home, Reverend Robert Morehouse officiating. Tennille is survived by her husband Marc Hayes, sons, Isaiah Hayes and his fiancé Hannah Degraw, of Hermon, Grant Hayes of Hermon, a daughter, Gabrielle Barton of Brockport, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Grant and Cathy Hayes of Chittenango, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, McKenna Hayes. Born on July 29, 1976 in Canandaigua, she graduated from the Naples High School. She married Marc Hayes on November 8, 2003 in Naples.  Tennille was a certified nurse’s aide at Canton Potsdam Hospital for the last nine years.  She was held in high regard by her colleagues at the hospital.  She loved spending time with her family and friends, and enjoyed reading. Joseph M. Spadaccini, 62, of Canton, formerly of DeKalb Junction, died on June 20, 2023, at his home.  There will be calling hours, Saturday, June 24, 2023, 9 – 11 am, followed by a graveside service, 11:15 am at the Union Cemetery, DeKalb Junction, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating. Jospeh is survived by his sons, Shawn Spadaccini and his fiancé, Emily Pinckney of South Colton, Anthony Spadaccini and his longtime companion, Brienne Gleason of Fort Edward, NY, his brother, Tomme and his wife Michelle Spadaccini of CT, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was born on August 10, 1960 in Hermon, NY, the son of the late James and Sylvia Bush Spadaccini. He graduated from the Hermon DeKalb Central School in 1978 and continued his education at SUNY Potsdam, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in in mathematics in 1982. A marriage to Jodie Sanderson ended in divorce.  Joe was a corrections officer at the Gouverneur Correctional Facility until his retirement in 2019, with 32 years on the job. Joseph was a member of the Moose Lodge 2397 in Potsdam and an associate member at the Canton VFW Post 1231.  He loved spending time with his family and friends, was a fan of music (all genre’s), appreciated wonderful singing voices, and was a NY Giants fan. Jennifer A. Clark, 73, of Edwards, died on May 26, 2023, at her home.  There will be no services. Jennifer is survived by her loving daughters, Brittany (Jason Brunet) Clark of Hermon, Kaitlin Clark of Edwards, long time companion, Frederick Glade Sr. of Edwards, grandchildren, Stuart Ashley Clark and Wyatt James Johnson. She was predeceased by her son, Stuart Ashley Sanderson on February 1986. She was born on September 13, 1949, in the Bronx, the daughter of the late Aurora and Harry Dunham. Jennifer earned a Bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Miami University. Recently she was an advocate for soldiers at Fort Drum. Prior to that she was a paralegal, and a television producer at PBS producing the show You and the Law.  She was currently writing a show for Netflix.  She loved to travel, horses, write and her career as a television producer. Robert B. Miller, 88, of DeKalb Junction, died on April 28, 2023, at his home. There will be calling hours, Friday, May 5, 12 – 2 PM, followed by a graveside service, 2:30 PM at the Hermon Cemetery, Pastor Martha Helmer officiating. Robert is survived by his son, Robert “ Mike” and his wife Sandra Miller of Front Royal, VA, daughters, Kelly and her husband Ralph Johnson of Madrid, Karen Perry of Ruckersville, VA, Shirley Mitchell and her husband Douglas Spotswood of Orange, VA, brothers, Edward and his wife Mary Miller of Palmyra, Everette and his wife Marlene Miller of OK, Ronald and Eloise Miller of Newark, a sister, Gloria Zehr of Gouverneur, a daughter in-law Sandra Miller of Norwood, Howard Kinch, a friend and family, step children, Judy Phillips, John Caringi, 14  grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sons, Benjamin Dale Miller, Randy J. Miller, a daughter, Maryanne Miller, brothers, John Miller, Lawrence Miller, Donald Miller, sisters, Onalee Matoon and Joyce Moore, a step son Mike Caringi, a grandson, Joseph Miller, three great grandchildren. He was born on April 4, 1935, in Fowler, the son of the late Bertie and Velva Vanatter Miller. He graduated from the Hermon High School in 1954. Marriages to Shirley Miner Fiacco and Helen Caringi ended in divorce.  He married Barbara Hance on December 27, 2014 at the DeKalb Senior Housing Community Room, she predeceased him in 2019. Robert owned the Tupper Lake Bakery, where he was also the baker.  Prior to that he was a general contractor for the Village of Potsdam. Robert was a very active volunteer, helping to improve people’s lives. He was on the St. Lawrence County Council, N. Y. Statewide Senior Action Council (past president, 4 years, and vice president 3 years) a member of the DeKalb Hermon Senior Citizen Club, Edwards Senior Citizen Club (past president), the Massena Senior Citizen Club and a delegate to the Russell Senior Citizen Club.  He was a member of the DeGrasse Methodist Church (he served as chairman, assistant chairman and was on the church board), the DeGrasse, Clare, South Russell Volunteer Fire Department.  He loved selling ads and tickets, going to the North Country Senior Rama, playing cards (Pedro), watching television, playing horseshoes, checkers chess and bowling, He was a NY Yankees and NY Giants fan.
