Shirley R. Gray, 92 of Massena and formerly of Canton, died on May 16,2022 at Massena Hospital. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Deborah Gray of New York City, NY, Denise Gray of La Jolla, CA, “several nieces and nephews, and many grand- and great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Doreen Rotundo, Eva Mousaw and Grace Cinanni, and her brother Roy Red Paro. She was born on July 9,1929 to the late Roy and Alice Sharpstene Paro. Shirley married R. Vernon Gray on December 20,1948, he predeceased her in 1965. She graduated from Canton High School and also graduated from Ogdensburg Business School. Early in her career she worked as an operator for New York Telephone in Potsdam and then was a clerk for St. Lawrence County until her retirement in 1994. Shirley was a member of CSEA, and the Ackwesasne Senior Citizen Club. She loved to play piano, make jig saw puzzles, exercise and going out to lunch with her friends. Randolph C. “Bud, R. Carl, or Carl” Youngs

Randolph Carl Youngs, 89 of River Road, Richville, NY, passed away at his home, after a long illness. He was best known to his friends and family as Bud and to the farming community as R. Carl or just Carl.

He was born on July 5^th, 1932 in Rossie, NY, the son of the late Randolph Churchill and Beulah Hilton Reynolds Youngs. A previous marriage to Memory LaBarge ended in divorce. He married Lila Rumbaugh on November 10^th, 1979 at Clare Porters home in Gouverneur. Their children were the attendants.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Lila Rumbaugh Youngs, daughters, Julie and her husband Rick Harra of Chaumont, Sandra Jenkins and her partner Thad Rosemyer of Massena, sons, Andy Youngs and his partner Michael Chin of Annadale VA, Russell and his wife Gloria Gard Youngs of Mishawaka IN, grandchildren Mark and his wife Jennifer Shippee of Richville, Matt and his wife Kaitlyn Harra of Philadelphia, Richard Harra, Nathan Harra, both of Chaumont, Megan and her wife Amy Mashaw of Gouverneur, David and his wife Angellee Jenkins of Fine, Robert Jenkins and life partner Michaela Shippee of Antwerp, James Jenkins and partner Lexi Klock of Fowler, Ross Youngs of Mishawaka, IN, great grand children Jacob, Mitchell, Lillanna, Maylea, Weston, Saige, Bryer, Annalee, and Harvey, four sisters Alice and her husband Douglas Weldon of Gouverneur, Joan Kinney of Saratoga Springs, Lona and her husband Leo Rastley of Rossie, Wanda and her husband John Bailey of Oriskany, brothers Lynn and his wife Norma Youngs of Rossie, NY, Wiley and his wife Rosemary Youngs of Akron, OH, a brother-in-law Ivan and his wife Dorthy Rumbaugh of Richmand MA, also numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brother and sister in laws, Clifford and Keitha Youngs, Bruce and Donna Youngs, Wallace and Carole Reynolds, Hugh and Ardis Reynolds, a brother-in-law Ivan Kinney, and an infant grandson Gregory C. Youngs.

Randolph was a member of the Richville United Church, the Richville Historical Association, Macomb and Rossie Historical Associations. As a dairy farmer he also served on the Board of Gouverneur COOP, as well as Marble City COOP. He obtained his certification as an artificial inseminator. He loved his life as a farmer, his family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He loved traveling by train, plane, or automobile, from ocean to ocean and his favorite western states. He was always an observer of farm country where ever he went and seemed to meet a fellow farmer whatever his traveling mode. Family visits, reunions, and his annual July birthday parties were the joy of his life.

At Randolph’s request there will be no funeral services. However, his grandchildren will host the annual July party on July second for family to celebrate his life and to be present at the burial at Rossie River Side Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Richville Free Library, Richville Volunteer Fire Department, or the United Church of Richville.

Stephen W. Luther Jr., 47, of Hermon, died, May 12, 2022 at his home. There will be a Celebration of Life on May 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM, at 457 Lazy River Road, Hermon, New York (Stephen’s home). Stephen is survived by his mother, Vickie Luther and her life partner John Holly of Harrisville, his life partner Jennifer Soper, daughters, Bailey Luther, Alexa Luther, Kaitlyn Luther, Abbigail Luther, Emmah Luther, a son Kaden Luther, a sister Anita Fenlong of DeKalb Junction, a granddaughter, Amelia Stephen Luther, a nephew Dustin and his wife Jessa Fenlong of Hermon, a niece, Kayna and her husband Caleb House of DeKalb Junction. He was predeceased by his father Stephen W. Luther and his son, Stephen W. Luther III. He was born on November 26, 1974 to Stephen and Vickie Roy Luther. He attended National Tractor Trailer School. He worked for Grasse River Asphalt in Russell as a truck driver. He enjoyed playing shuffle board and pool. He raced drag cars in Cicero, NY with his dad. He was an avid family man. Rosemary Hamilton Kyer, 95 of DeKalb Junction, died on April 6, 2022, at her daughter, Christine Trathen’s home. There will be calling hours on Monday, April 11, 11:30 am – 1:30 PM at the funeral home, a funeral service will follow at the Hermon United Methodist Church at 2 PM, burial will be in the Hermon Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the American Heart Fund, Alzheimer Association, Brain and Aneurysm Foundation, Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, the Hermon or South Edwards United Methodist Churches.

Marilyn G. Layaw, 95, of Potsdam, died, March 2, 2022 at Highland Nursing Home. As per Marilyn’s wishes there will be no services. Marilyn is survived by her son, Daniel Layaw and his companion Tanya Benjamin, her daughters, Robin and her husband Timothy Bradish of Potsdam, Angela Chincinski and her companion Darren Kelly, her sister Joyce Phillips of Council Bluff, Iowa, 9 grandchildren, several, great and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers and six sisters. Marilyn was born December 5, 1926 in Potsdam to the late, Ernest and Mary O’Brien LaPoint. She married Clyde Layaw on August 3, 1946, he predeceased her in 2010. Marilyn was a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, going to garage sales and sitting on her patio talking to her neighbors. Contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Aileen Vincent-Barwood passed peacefully through the Veil in her sleep on Sunday, February 20th, surrounded with love. In her 98th year of an adventurous life, the writer was ready to end her story.

Born to the late Harriett and George Walton of Toronto, Aileen attended Moulton College Finishing School before volunteering for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a wireless radio operator. In the military she met the love of her life, E. A. Vincent-Barwood, a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. After WWII, Aileen and Vince married and attended Mount Allison University. Shortly after graduating they moved to Ethiopia. Over their 75 years together, their travels took them to the Middle East, New York State’s Hudson Valley, West Africa, Northern New York, the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, New England, and finally back to Canton for their later snowbird years.

A lifelong journalist, Aileen started out as a foreign correspondent for the CBC and the Toronto Daily Star, ultimately becoming the editor of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer in the 1970s. She believed that small hometown newspapers are the backbone of our nation’s free press, and our freedom. She authored three books: North Country Editor, a compilation of her “Grasse Roots” editorial columns; This Sweet Place – Island Living and Other Adventures, a chronicle of winters spent in their home on Exuma, Bahamas, illustrated by Vince; and A Murderous Thirst – Death Comes to the Adirondacks, an environmental murder mystery. Additionally, Aileen wrote numerous short stories and articles for various magazines, and volunteered as an English tutor at a women’s prison throughout her 80’s. An avid gardener, lover of dogs, and devout Unitarian, Ai was happy pulling weeds, discussing physics, championing the less fortunate, and advocating for human rights.

Aileen was predeceased by her brother, Harris Walton, and in February 2021, by her beloved Vince. She is survived by her children Scott Vincent-Barwood, Jennifer Vincent-Barwood and husband John McCloskey, bonus son Thomas Gardner and companion Terri Chalone; grandchildren Connie Takeshita and husband Jason Takeshita, Aubri Vincent-Barwood, Zachariah Knight and wife Elizabeth Herrington Knight, and Zoë Knight; her great-grandchildren Olivia, Scott, and Dane Takeshita, and Evelyn Knight; and many friends of all ages.

A memorial service for Aileen and Vince will be held this summer. For those so inclined, remembrance contributions may be given to the Canton Free Library, Potsdam Humane Society, or North Country Public Radio. In Aileen’s memory, take your dog for a walk, read a banned book, enjoy sunrise with a good cup of tea, or marvel at the quantum universe.

Vickie M. Morse, 71, of Canton, died, February 14, 2022 at her home. Services for Vickie will be private. There will be a graveside service on May 22, 2024, 11:30 am at Cook’s Corner Cemetery, Pierrepont. Vickie is survived by her daughter, Kelly and her husband James Mandigo of Vermont, her son, Perry Masters of Ogdensburg, a brother William and his wife Candie Morse of Gouverneur, grandchildren, Tyran Mandigo, Christopher Laddison, Kyle Perry, Patrick Rockhill, Braiden Rockhill, adopted grandchildren, Noah Marckres and Gabrielle Marckres, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Elizabeth Morse, Sandra Hynes and her common law husband, Richard Sanford. Vickie was born September 23, 1950, in Gouverneur to the late, Gerald and Mary Mattison Morse. Vickie worked as clerk at the General Store in DePeyster, and Ames. She helped manage her husband’s business, Sanford Inc. in Colton, for many years. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching mystery shows, online games, Facebook and watching Tic Toc. The joy of her life was her grandson, Tyran. Contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society. Vickie’s family would like to thank Dr. Anghel and Dr. Lee for the wonderful care of their mom.

There will calling hours at the funeral home, February 19, 2022, 12 -2 PM, masks are required and all COVID protocols will be in effect. Ronald is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughters, Linda Stevens and her significant other Matthew Martin of Hermon, Tina and her husband Steven House of Russell, his brothers, Dale Stevens of Lisbon, Eugene Stevens of Heuvelton, a sister, Dorothy Stevens of Heuvelton, 5 grandchildren, Logan Stevens, Joey Payne, Dartagnan House, Aiden Chase, and Tyler Bush, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jenny Bush, and a granddaughter, Serena Stevens. Ron was born November 21, 1958, in Ogdensburg to the late, Charles and Pauline Howes Stevens. He graduated from Heuvelton Central School in 1978. He married Margaret Hogg in July 1981 in Florida. Ron worked as a fuel deliveryman for Philly Fuels in Philadelphia, for many years. He loved spending time with his family, riding motorcycles, and driving muscle cars. He played Santa at day care centers or for anyone who wanted to take a picture with him. Muriel Patton., 87, of Hermon, died, January 22, 2022 at her home. There will be a private graveside service in the spring, at Fairview Cemetery. Muriel is survived by her sons, John Patton of Colorado, Arthur and his wife Kimberly Patton of Oswego, daughters, Debra and her husband Scott Bennett of DeKalb Junction, Cathy and her husband Neil Thomas of Pierrepont, Sandra and her husband William Russell of Canton, 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased her husband James, a brother Melbourne Aldous, and a sister Grace (Aldous) Bowles. Muriel was born February 13, 1934 in Madrid to the late, Jacob Claude and Ethel Crary Aldous. Muriel graduated from DeKalb High School in 1952. She married James A. Patton on December 29, 1953 at the Gouverneur Methodist Church, Reverend Robert Woods officiating, he died on August 21, 2004. She worked as an operator for New York Telephone in Gouverneur from 1952-1960, in 1975 she and her husband opened and operated Patton’s TV in Hermon until the 1980’s. Muriel was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars Chapter 108 and the Hermon United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed garage sales, the casino, and crocheting. Clarridge D. Grant., 94, of DeKalb Junction, died, January 18, 2022 at his home. There will be a graveside service on May 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM with military honors at Hermon Cemetery, Pastor Joseph Weidler officiating . Don is survived by his sons, Thomas and his wife Emily Grant, of Rensselaer Falls, Bruce and his wife Bonnie Grant, of DeKalb Junction, his daughter, Kitty and her husband Steven Cook, of Massena, 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Anna, a son, Steven Grant, a great grandson Grant Woodrow, brothers, Phillip and Richard Grant, and a sister, Harriet Gary. Clarridge was born July 21, 1927 in Potsdam to the late, Glenn and Elsie Curtis Grant. He married Anna Thomas on July 21,1948 at the United Methodist Church, Colton, she died on October 4, 2020. Don was in the Army during WWII, where he earned an Army of Occupation Medal and a WWII Victory Medal. He worked for National Grid first as a line foreman, then in 1966 he became the supervisor in Hermon until his retirement in 1976. Don was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the AMVETS Post 11, Gouverneur Elks Club, Hannawa Falls Fire Department, Emerald Greens, Canton Country Club, and a life member of the DAV. He had been a Town of Hermon Councilman.
