Joan I. Burwell, 78, of DeKalb Junction, died on October 4, 2018, at her home. There will be calling hours on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, 10 am – 12 PM, the funeral service will follow. Joan is survived by her daughters, Marsha Burwell of Oregon, Virginia and her husband Kevin Murray, of Lisbon, Dawn and her husband Chris Meuten of Ogdensburg, Brenda and her husband Michael Hollars of North Carolina, Deborah Middlemiss of Maryland, Jessie Burwell and her companion Brent Brenno of Ogdensburg, a sister, Cheryl Longfellow of California, 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Rica Parras, Theresa Brown and a grandson James Burwell. Joan was born on June 11, 1940, in Potsdam, the daughter of Earl and Virginia Rheome Puirre. A marriage to James R. Burwell ended in divorce. She worked as a self-employed housekeeper. Joan was a member of the Hermon DeKalb Senior Citizen Club, a past member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Canton. She enjoyed, dancing, traveling, reading, and going to AM VETS Post 11. Jackson John David McLaughlin, became an angel on September 17, 2018. He is survived his parents Sherry (Newcombe) and John David McLaughlin of DeKalb, his brother Jacob Newcombe, maternal grandparents, Sheila and Scott Newcombe of DeKalb, paternal grandmother, Cindy Gordon Sr. and partner Richard Cherry of Edwards, great grandparents, Virginia Bullis of DeKalb, Howie and Marion Newcombe of DeKalb, uncles, Scott Newcombe Jr and fiancé Joshua Rose of Plattsburgh, Sean and Christy Newcombe of DeKalb, James Belonge of Hermon, Terry Gordon III and partner Kerry Ashley of Gouverneur, Jason and Katie Gordon of Edwards, Wallace and Daniel McLaughlin of Russell, aunts, Tina Wood of St. Regis Falls, Cindy Gordon Jr. and longtime partner Robert J. John E. Newvine, 60, of Gouverneur, died on September 7, 2018, at Strong Memorial Hospital. There will be calling hours on Saturday, September 15, 2018, 2 – 5 PM at the funeral home. John is survived by his wife, Vicki Newvine, his father, James Newvine of Plattsburgh, a son, Michael Newvine of Heuvelton, a daughter Rachel Newvine and Eric Payment of Tupper Lake, a brother, James Newvine Jr. of DeKalb Junction, a sister Jane Miller Newvine of Ovid, a granddaughter, Adelyn Mae Wayering of Tupper Lake, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Joann Newvine in 2010. John was born on November 5, 1957, in Gouverneur, New York, the son of James and Joann Horton Newvine. He graduated from Hermon DeKalb Central School, on May 25, 1991 he married Vicki Alguire at the Christ Church of Love in Old DeKalb. He worked for United Helpers in Evans Mills as a maintenance man, prior to that he worked for Witherbee and Whalen in Canton for many years. He loved playing golf, bowling, and playing horseshoes. He played horseshoes in the Green Belt League. He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made his wife Vicki Newvine.

Theron D. Stacy, 84, of DeKalb Junction, died on June 16, 2018, at Maplewood Campus. There will be no services. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Theron is survived by his daughter Penny Stacy of Canton, 1 niece and 2 nephews. He was born on January 2, 1934, in Gouverneur, New York, the son of the late Don L. and Dorothy Bush Stacy. He graduated from DeKalb High School, in 1951, he married Margaret Brown on August 18, 1958 at the Gouverneur Methodist Church, and she died on March 26, 1994. Theron worked on his family farm all his life. He was a lifelong member of the International Order Odd Fellows in Ogdensburg. He was a sports enthusiast hockey, baseball and football in particular. Harold M. Lowery, 80, DeKalb Junction, passed away at home surrounded by his family. Calling hours will be Friday, June 8, 2018, 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home, DeKalb Junction. A funeral mass will be on Saturday, June 9, 2018, 1:30 PM at St. Mary’s Church, Canton, Father Bryan Stitt officiating. Burial will follow at Hermon Cemetery, Pastor Robert La Clair officiating. Harold was born April 14, 1938, to Catherine E. (McHugh) and Hernden Lowery. He married Carol Ann Lowery October 20, 1962, at St. Henry’s Church in DeKalb with Father Whittaker officiating. He is survived by wife of 56 years, Carol A., son Michael H. (Ellen) Lowery, Pulaski, daughter Lisa M. (Bob La Clair) Perry, DeKalb Junction; grandchildren, Catherine (Miguel) Perry, Syracuse, Ian (Kaylee) Lowery, Richlands, NC, Max Lowery, Pulaski, and Patrick (Matasha) Perry, DeKalb Junction; great granddaughter, Alaina Lowery; sisters, Kathleen Goria, Nyack, NY, and Ursula Coffey, Russell, NY; many beloved nieces and nephews; friends and neighbors; and his faithful companion, Bella. Harold is predeceased by sisters, Mary Eleanor Rowell, Eileen Derushia, Bernice Dashnaw, and Esther Bice; brothers Robert Hand, John Hand, and Earl Patrick Hand; special Uncle P. Joseph McHugh; and great granddaughter Olivia Ann Lowery. Harold attended Hermon High School and graduated from Anchorage High School while in Alaska. Harold has been a lifelong farmer on the Orebed Road in DeKalb Junction, receiving the Century Farm distinction in 2016, which is awarded to farms that have been in continuous operation by the same family for over 100 years. He also served in the Alaska Air National Guard and worked at Kinney Drugs, Inc., Long Year Drilling at the mines, trucked cattle to local cattle auctions, as well as a variety of other work activities to provide for his family. He (as a teenager) and his family took over the operation of the farm upon his father’s death. Haroldy Acres has been a source of pride and enjoyment for the entire family, passing on the legacy of hard work, determination, and character (with a few shenanigans mixed in!) He will always be remembered for a wink and a smile, his quick wit, great advice, and a good joke. Harold always had draft and riding horses including his favorite mare Dolly and her four siblings who were born, raised, and worked on the farm. You could always find him lending a hand to anyone in need, placing others before himself, and could unequivocally be counted on for standing up for what he believed to be right – which you never had to question, especially when he spun his hat around! Harold served on the DeKalb Town Board for 23 years, chairman of the St. Lawrence County Democratic Committee for the town of DeKalb, Gouverneur/SLC Fair Board, draft horse superintendent at Gouverneur fair, member of the St. Lawrence Valley Draft Horse Club, North Country Arabian Horse Association, and he and his family participated in showing animals and exhibits at the Gouverneur Fair for generations. You could also find him giving rides for various organizations with his beloved draft horses. Harold enjoyed camping, gardening, animals of all kinds, and helping others. Harold will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, children, family and friends. Glen E. Simmons, 73, of DePeyster, died on June 2, 2018, at Canton Potsdam Hospital. There will be calling hours on Thursday, June 7, 2018, 3 – 6 PM at the funeral home. Glen is survived by his life partner Diane Vieta, a son, Craig and his wife Mandy Simmons of Winthrop, a brother, Earl and his wife Helen Simmons of Macomb, sisters, Bonnie Turnbull of Depeyster, Marsha and her husband Mike Streeter of Canton, grandchildren, Levi and Connor Simmons, Lauren Sharpe and her life partner Payton Montroy, Jolee Johnson, great grandson, Jedidiah Montroy, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Cathy Sharpe, a grandson Garrett Scott Sharpe and his brother Paul Simmons. Glen was born on November 20, 1944, in Ogdensburg, New York, the son of the late Leon “Joe” and Rita Beamish Simmons. He graduated from Heuvelton Central School, he was in the Army from 1965-1967 and earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He married Judith Lunderman, they were blessed with two children, divorced, but remained friends. Glen was a self-employed carpenter, he also worked for St. Joe’s Mine as a shift supervisor. He loved NASCAR, old cars, woodworking, and wood crafts. He was a member of the Elks and American Legion in Gouverneur. Carmen Graves, 92, of Massena, died on May 24, 2018, at the St. Regis Nursing Home. There will be no services, Carmen was a generous donation to science. Carmen is survived by his wife Martha and a son Gregory Graves of Brasher. He was predeceased by his son, Kurt Graves in 2006. Carmen was a WWII veteran. He retired 30 years ago as a psychiatric therapy aide (with nurse’s recognition) from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, Potsdam Animal Shelter, or the charity of ones choice.

Sandra L. LaClair, 74, of Brasher Falls, died on April 13, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family. There will be no services, Sandra was a generous donation to science. Sandra is survived by her husband, Vincent LaClair, her daughters, Sonja and her husband Paul Johnston of Waddington, Laurene Sicurella of Pittsfield, MA, her siblings, Ward B. Shorette, Jr. of Brasher, Shirley Aigen of Massena, Laura and Larry Phippen of Brasher, 3 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Sandra was born on July 6, 1943, in Potsdam, New York, the daughter of the late Ward and Lorraine Dennis Shorette. She married Vincent in 1961 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church. She was a cafeteria worker for 40 years at SUNY Potsdam. She loved, knitting, hunting, fishing, and target shooting with handguns, she was also a member of the American Legion. Angelina M. Donaldson, 8, of Canton, became one of God’s angels on April 1, 2018. Angelina is survived by her loving parents, Diane Donaldson of Canton, Larry Donaldson of Canton, her grandfather Vernon E. Miller and his companion Lisa LaBrake of Fine, her brother, Larry J. Donaldson of Canton, step brothers, Casey Donaldson and his fiancé Kay Zimmer of Canton, Jonathan Donaldson of Plattsburgh, step sister Brandy Matejcik of Stockholm, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Leslie W. and Helen L. Donaldson, and Beverly Miller. Angelina was born on February 25, 2010, in Ogdensburg, New York. She was a 2nd grade student at Banford Elementary School in Canton. She was a member of the girl scouts. She loved animals, especially her cats Gizmo and Smokey, playing Minecraft, drawing and watching You Tube. Anyone who knew Angelina would tell you she was a loving child with a contagious smile.

Beloved husband, father and son Edward Fischer passed away peacefully at the age of 86 following a short illness on March. 15, 2018. He is survived by his son Steven J Fischer, daughter in law, Pamela Fischer and granddaughter Anna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward J and Minnie Buys Fischer and his wife Virginia Flight Fischer.
Ed lived a life of service to his country and to his community. He was a career military officer, retiring from the Army in 1969 after twenty years of active duty. A decorated veteran, he received the Good Conduct Medal with two knots, the National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, the Republic of Vietnam campaign ribbon, and the Meritorious Unit Citation. In 1969, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, which is reserved for members of the armed services who commit acts of heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service. He met his late wife Virginia Fischer while serving at Ft. Drum (then Camp Drum) and after marriage lived in France and Germany before returning to DeKalb Junction. Married for 56 years, Ed and Virginia will be forever remembered for their contributions to DeKalb, most notably the creation of senior citizen housing, the historical museum and chairing the Herman-DeKalb alumni association for decades.
Upon retirement from the army, he served as a Deputy Sheriff for St. Lawrence County for 15 years where he was known for his kindness to all, including people who were processed under his care. His commitment to service didn’t end with retirement and he spent the next 30 years as an active volunteer in his community. Having volunteered for the Radio Emergency Citizens Action Teams (REACT) while in the military he continued providing emergency service in DeKalb as a volunteer fireman. He served as chaplain of the DeKalb Senior Citizens association, holding membership for more than ten years. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, assisting at the nutrition center and advocated on several occasions for its continued service to the community. One of his proudest moments was being recognized as St. Lawrence County’s New York State Senior Citizen’s of the year in 2015. He also enjoyed the fellowship of the church community as a member of the DeKalb Methodist church.
Ed loved fishing, following navy ships on his Ham radio, playing flight simulator video games and keeping up with community affairs. He moved to Washington state in December 2016 to be with his son’s family where he enjoyed sampling the many ethnic foods in the area as well as the local breweries. He recently visited elementary schools, in full uniform, to describe his experiences as a veteran. Ed will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.
Visiting hours will be from noon-2 pm on Saturday, March 31st, at the Allen-Denesha Funeral Home in Dekalb Junction. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association or the Hermon Rescue Squad.
